Streams of Happiness
I’d like to say that my grandmother was not a wicked witch (although very stern, indeed). This was a fun challenge from Tipsy Lit Prompted. 495 words.
Streams of Happiness
It was always a magical place to me. My grandmother’s back yard, The patio and lawn were a courtyard and the stone wall was the protective wall of the castle. A few more steps and you were in a deep, dark forest. Carefully trodden steps lest the bandits and robbers find you. As a princess, the forest was forbidden, but it was my magic forest and so I returned over and over.
My grandmother (the wicked witch) would whip my bottom if she caught me there. One day, I’d slipped out and along my way found a small, trickling brook. It couldn’t have been more than a foot wide, yet it bubbled and rippled along happily through the darkest part of the forest. It caught the sunlight as it giggled its way past me dancing.. I giggled too and started to play with the water. I splashed my face, danced in it, sang with it and found myself soaked when reality struck. I had to go face Grandma. She’d be boiling in stern fury.
I found the courage to step inside the house “Easter Ellen, Where have you been?” I dropped my chin. Then GASP “Goodness gracious you are soaked!!! You’ve ruined your new dress and you’re dripping everywhere!!”
“I’m so sorry Grandma” tears were spilling down my cheeks.
She came to me with a towel and angrily started to rub away the water. She handed the towel to me, then began to ring my hair out. She stepped back, smiled, “silly girl, you look so funny dripping like a wet rat. Come let me give you a bath, Darling, before you chill”. My mouth dropped again in complete disbelief! What had just happened? Grandma would NEVER talk to me after dirtying myself like that! She was very strict. It didn’t matter, I revelled in her new mood as she shampooed my hair, scrubbed my back and fluffed me dry.
The next day, I snuck out to my little brook in my magical forest and not chancing yesterday’s mess, I simply played with the water and took some home in a jar to remind me of how much fun I’d had.
Grandma saw the jar and the expected stern look came; “what is that?”
“It’s magic Grandma, it’s a secret.; dip your finger in it and you’ll see.”
Reluctantly abiding my wish, she dipped her finger in and smelled it. “Why this is just lovely Easter! Did you mix roses and lilacs in here? It’s delightful!”
I got it. It was a stream of Happiness. Whoever it touched was instantly refreshed into a happy mood.
Grandpa came home late from work grumbling about some office mishap. I dipped my finger into the jar, touched his hand and waited. He smiled up at me and said “Com’ere ya little sugar puff, give Gramps some sugar”, He pulled me in tight with a warm embrace as I basked in his love.
Who would I touch next?
Thank You for Being a Blessing in my Life, Easter. I Appreciate YOU 🙂

What a heart warming story; I thoroughly enjoyed it! I couldn’t help but feel a strong conviction as I recalled moments when I sternly questioned my children when mud and dirt covered my recently mopped kitchen floors. How I wish such water existed; I don’t ever want to be a burdensome memory for my children. I will remember this story for sure; especially with summer having made it’s arrival. 🙂
Thanks for sharing this, really.

Couldn’t rush if I wanted to.. Been so tired and weak. I wanted to drive to my boyfriend’s house last night and my son took my keys away! Imagine that!! He said “Mom, You just look wrong.. I can’t let you drive”. He was right, unfortunately, but I did get a lot more sleep and he helped me get what I need. (God bless him).
