To Lose Everything

From the Daily Post Prompt Worst Case Scenario

This made me think of something that I go through often, but thank God for there always being an end to it.

Feeding Frenzy

This dry, arid place of desolation

Shattered, I lie broken on the ground

This ruinous place of no salvation

Defeat, hatred and anguish all abound

Like a statue, numb to my surroundings

I sit here void of any normal thought

My head quakes me, relentless in its pounding

I wonder what it is for which I fought

I see their jagged daggers mark their target

Their aim straight and true towards my soul

Each seeking the destruction of my spirit

Dark lusting mouths; I have become their goal

Wielding torment, pursuing my destruction

Each tear of mine a victory that they cheer

They huddle ’round; I’m helpless to defend

I’m swimming in the nightmare of my fear

Only on my spirit do they frenzy

I open up my mouth and praise my God

They shriek in their hatred for His glory

Despite the pain I’m breaking their facade

I fill my heart with memories of His beauty

I begin to pray despite this moment’s truth

The demons all around me now are spewing

Their loathsome ways so callow and uncouth

I feel the chains of bondage start to loosen

I feel the darkness losing to the light

I wonder why I didn’t cry out sooner

Why I took so long to let Him fight this fight

I curl up exhausted from this nightmare

Peace ebbs its way into my dreary soul

I look to the heavens and I’m thankful

My loving God to you do I extol

  1. Excellent! This one really makes the reader think and appreciate what is offered, above. I have been in a ‘low’ place like this before. So happy to be free of it. ๐Ÿ™‚ Blessings to you.

  2. Easter,
Excuse me but being a man I thought your initial line was about “that time of month”. Then you seemed to shift to writing about migraine head aches – a subject with which I’m much, much too familiar.

    • lol – it is about neither.. it is about nightmares. I get them far too often and it is a relief to wake up from them, although the fear can occasionally leave me paralyzed if it is still dark and I am alone.

  4. You are an amazing poet Ellen. I nearly skipped by because poetry is not my forte, but something drew me back. Boy am I glad I took note and read your poem. It’s flippin’ fantastic! Thank you for sharing it ๐Ÿ™‚

    • ๐Ÿ™‚ Thank you for such a wonderful compliment. I am so glad that this spoke to you despite not having a preference for poetry.
Poetry is my home for expression.. seems to just perfectly articulate what a paragraph can’t for me.
I appreciate you stopping by and your very kind comment.
Hope to see you again ๐Ÿ˜‰

      • Your welcome, it was an amazing read ๐Ÿ™‚ I’m the opposite – can only get things out through prose. Even on my writing blog it’s all prose. I’ve tried poetry but just cannot for the life of me grasp it – nor usually even famous poets. Me and poetry have a tough relationship!! ๐Ÿ˜‰
