One Night’s Dance

One night’s dance

His sins cloaked around him like a garment of mire
He stepped boldly forth to take in her fire

He glanced at her beauty, “angelic” he said
He grunted hello but then hung his head

Shame engulfed him as he took in her beauty
Humble benevolence he felt was his duty

His heart so afflicted, so weary with woe
From a life that had raped him and been his worst foe

Hope was so far from his daily routine
Yet he wanted so much this princess of a dream

He reached out his hand to ask for a dance
All the courage within him not believing the chance

She smiled at him gently and took on his grip
She saw not his sin but the smile on his lips

They stepped and they twirled their hearts in such pleasure
Each step the gift of a lifetime, a diamond of treasure

She felt his honour, his respect and his care
He felt so humbled to be with her there

She smiled at his reverence, warmed in his arms
He trembled to hold her, afraid he would harm

He glanced around as they waltzed to and fro
Looking for others less worthy to know

Looking for one that would share in his status
She closed her eyes as his embrace was their stratus

The song sweetly ended and he parted from her
Her smile disappeared as he left in a blur

Her mind racing wildly at what had gone wrong
To him their embrace was a sweet playing song

A song played like honey upon love-hoping ears
But it ended and so did her hope and his tears

His heart again latched to the thought of his sin
Never believing his worth for this beautiful queen

Never thinking at all that he could be what she sought
Believing the lie that his soul had been bought

They parted, he danced with those of his kind
She watched with her tears, their love left behind

She knew of the value of a gentleman’s heart
He believed he was worthless, that they’d best be apart

And so the night ended, two lovers both broken
They both carried on as if they’d never spoken

She never danced again, never hoped for another
To dance with her, sing with her, become her sweet lover

He danced on in empty, well-practiced steps
The memory of her buried in his hearts deepest depths

    • despite how sad this is, I like it.. I like happy endings, but it is not always so. (Although, thankfully, mine has turned around).

  1. Surely it was God who led me here–I too am an Overcomer of life-long depression. Some days are no picnic, but never as bad as they used to be–I’m so grateful He showed up exactly 3 years ago, during Easter week 2011, to let me know there was so much MORE. I’d been a Christian since age 12-13, but knew nothing of the Abundant Life. God bless you, Easter Ellen–what a wonderful name!!

I love and appreciate feedback. Feel free to let me know what you think. Bless you lots, Easter Ellen
