Some Mothers Know

Perhaps this is ill-timed as Mothers’ Day approaches, but for some, Mothers’ Day can be painful in ways that most would not understand.  This is not meant to offend those who have a loving relationship with their Mom.  God bless you all – when a mother’s love is missing, we still have the love of God which is so much deeper and greater than we can ever understand.

Some Mothers Know

Some mothers have the child they call bad

The one that the mother wants not

The one who smiles, when seen as a sneer

Who is called a brat, a tyrant, a snot

Some mothers are happy to blame this one

Who steals joy just by entering a room

The silence that follows, echoing disdain

Mother snarls as she’s seeping her gloom

Some mothers look with hateful eyes

Blaming their mis-planted seeds on her

Never a kind tone, never a smile

This child’s misfortune, a seedless, dry burr

Some mothers envy this vile child’s success

“Her brother could have been so much better”

“Her sister, so lovely, the pink of my cheeks”

Hated completely in each smile, call or letter

Some mothers know the truth of this child

That it really was never her fault

But self-hatred projected feels so much better

The mother’s love locked in hatred’s sweet vault

  1. My mother is nearly 80. I avoid fake words in mothers day cards (in the UK Mothers day was two months ago). She is mentally alert and very quick to judge as she has been all her life. She can be as nice as pie and as hurtful as hell. Age has changed nothing. She wouldn’t even come to my wedding last year, too much hassle. Then moaned like mad that she’d missed it. Mothers.
