The Innocent Chain

The Innocent Chain
She was in love with another man
He was to smart for her; he found out
The dark, brooding mood never left him
She’d erased love and replaced it with doubt
Her own mood consumed her, changed who she was
Again the scared, oaf of a girl that she’d been
No longer timid but insane with rage
The man who’d loved her now relentlessly mean
This was a time where women weren’t much
Just a wife, a mother, a servant to men
When he found out another had stolen her heart
She knew she’d never feel love’s touch again
She stared at those eyes, that innocent chain
Eight minutes old, wanting into her soul
Tight-lipped and angry, where was the love?
A new mother but so very cold
She turned away, this innocent babe
That shackled her Mother to her Dad
Just born I’ve already done something wrong
There must be something I’ve done that is bad
The new babe turned in hope once again
To plead her case to her new Mother
Fate had already put the blame on this child
That chained her Mom to Dad not her lover
As a footnote to this poem, I know that it is not cheerfully written as I tend to prefer to write, but it is written from the heart.  Isn’t that where we can find the best of who we are to offer the world even if it seems to be hopeless and sad.
There will be more written about this child and this marriage in time.  Until then, happy reading and may the Lord bless you and keep you & shine His face upon you.

  1. Awesome poetry here it brought back memories of days long gone, and I remember as a child them good old days when women were more at home then anything and men as you put it up there were running off doing whatever they wanted all the time. Nice flow! and thanks for sharing on our Poetic Ink G+ community.

  2. Thanks Mike for your thoughtful comments and time. Yes, it brings back a time of my childhood also where women were to some me, more a possession than a beloved partner.. either way the trauma in this lies within each of the 3 characters' hearts. The woman enraged with herself for cheating and for not being with the man she loved, the man at the betrayal and the disdain with which he later treated her and the child who was the innocent shackling of the two. I am enjoying the community – thank you again Mike,Easter Ellen
